Anyone noticed how stressed John Brumby looks at the moment??

Gaunt and looking like a rabbit in the spotlight when talking about Peter Cosgrove's comments about a strand of racism in Australia and Simon Overland's gutsy comments that the police have been dealing with a racial problem against Indian students for a couple of years.

Seems the top quality people are now starting to speak out and speak the truth about the problem in order to get to proper solutions.

All Brumby wants to do is spin it and try and deny the problem away. Typical political response - good news only.

Seems all the sleaking out is weakneing his authority and boy he looks stressed.

Where can he go? There is no winning argument, he is very definitely trapped.

If the attacks are racist, then the immigration setting is wrong and his state, built on immigration has suddenly turned savage. With Australia's growth setting based on exponential increase in migrants to reach 35,000,000 by 2050, that very fact alarming.

If the attacks are opportunistic then he presides over a state where ordinary people are not safe to travel on public transport, where most people modify their behaviour to avoid 'risk' situations, that will not go to work at odd hours to keep this 24 hour society functioning, including fast food, fast alcohol and police and hospitals. It would also mean that those Indian students who chose to migrate to Australia (via study programs) are actually receiving exactly the same treatment that any poor, hardworking Victorian experiences - a life permanently at risk with the expectation of being assaulted (at least in Werribee, Sunshine, St Albans, Dandenong, Pakenham, Bayswater, Broadmeadows, Thomastown, Frankston, etc). That hardly gels with the utopia most migrants thought was Australia.

Yep, Brumby has not winning argument on this issue. Give him points though for keeping it all together as his hair turns greyer and greyer.

Totally lost for ideas, and don't even know where to steal the good ones from! What a pack of idiots.

http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/brumby-plagiarises-tony-blairs-respect-agenda/story-e6frg6n6-1225822314721

THE Brumby government's "respect agenda", including the appointment of the nation's first minister to encourage respect in the community, has been exposed as a copy of an initiative launched by former British prime minister Tony Blair in 2005 and dumped three years later.

"This is a major embarrassment to John Brumby and his government which will go down in history as one of the most flagrant acts of political plagiarism," Mr Davis said. "Victorians need real policy solutions like more police on the streets

Federation of Indian Students of Australia chairman Gautam Gupta said encouraging racial tolerance was a good step but the government needed to concentrate on more practical solutions

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/plans-slammed-for-new-souvenir-shop-in-victorian-parliament-building/story-e6frf7jo-1225823752059

THE front of State Parliament will be turned into a shop selling trinkets to tourists in plans drawn up by the State Government.

Opposition major projects spokesman Richard Dalla-Riva slammed the idea, saying the refit could cost up to $5 million.

"There is record violent crime in Victoria, not enough police or hospital beds, and public transport is in crisis," Mr Dalla-Riva said.

"But instead of helping families, John Brumby is spending millions to destroy heritage areas in Parliament and create the 'Brumby World' gift shop."

Funny if it weren't so serious.

PREMIER John Brumby has called for a more sensible debate on violence against Indian students after angry protests about the "torture" of Indian students.

The spin king is expected to play a high-profile role in efforts to rebuild relations after violent attacks against Indian students.

CURBING late-night violence and boosting struggling families will be the two main themes of Premier John Brumby's "State of the State" speech to Parliament.

But Liberal leader Ted Baillieu said Mr Brumby's speech would be posturing.

"Under John Brumby, public transport is in chaos, hospitals are in crisis, violent crime is at record levels and there are insufficient water supplies - and his failure to deliver on his commitments means that little will ever improve," he said.

There are days when I have to admire Brumby. Everything is collapsing around his feet; his personnel are incompetent; his powerbase is corrupt; his supporters are realising how ridiculous his posturing is but you have to admire his tenacity and his getting out there everyday to deliver a solid, dependable persona in the daily crisis of governing Victoria. Contrast him to Rudd who every time the polls turn against him becomes a histrionic, snarly, sarcastic prima donna. That 'potty mouth' description seems valid in view of his emotional spurts of action as polls deliver bad news. To his credit Brumby just keeps on in there.

The problem for Baillieu is that he has to fight the traditonal Labor campaign - more public services - because Brumby has moved into the traditional right of centre place occupied for the Liberals. It will be odd to see a Liberal spouting Leftist social agendas take victory over Labor.

The Libs have to sprout new social agendas to win the election. Linked to fairness, safety, transport, health, education and so on.

About closing the widening gaps between the haves and have nots and reducing social and community tensions.

This is the place the ALP failed in when it moved into Lib right of centre territory.

http://www.theage.com.au/national/ad-feature-not-aimed-at-altona-voters-brumby-20100208-nnad.html

PREMIER John Brumby says a 24-page advertising feature spruiking Melbourne's west in The Sunday Age was planned months ago, and was not intended to influence voters at this Saturday's Altona byelection.

But the opposition says the feature, paid for by six western suburbs councils and the state and federal governments, should be investigated by the Victorian Electoral Commission because of its proximity to the poll.

Opposition scrutiny of government spokesman David Davis said the full-colour lift-out was a disgrace and a scandal.

http://www.theage.com.au/opinion/society-and-culture/indian-students-racism-and-a-debate-spiralling-out-of-control-20100210-nsau.html

John Brumby has lost control of the violence-against-Indians debate

The danger for the Premier is that as more people speak out about the problem of racism in Victoria, and accuse the government of an inadequate response, he will be seen as unrealistic and isolated.

Last month, former Defence Force chief Peter Cosgrove used an Australia Day address to say the issue of violence towards Indians had become "a major problem".

Last week, The Age revealed that India's high commissioner to Australia, Sujatha Singh, had sought a meeting with Governor-General Quentin Bryce to tell her that Victoria was "in denial" over the severity of the problem.

"Perhaps no premier since World War II has done more to damage the Australian national interest than Brumby," Sheridan wrote, damning the Premier's "pathetic, dismal response" to racist violence as the work of "a narrow, provincial politician of very grave limitations".

Baillieu told the Australia India Business Council that racism was a real and present problem in Victoria, but Brumby was refusing to confront it and as a result the problem was getting worse. This, Baillieu charged, was a failure of leadership.

http://www.theage.com.au/national/brumby-baillieu-clash-over-states-crime-level-20100212-nxkn.html

PREMIER John Brumby has accused Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu of trashing Victoria's reputation after the Opposition Leader released crime figures showing a dramatic jump in street violence during Labor's 10 years in office.

Mr Brumby's attack came after Mr Baillieu released statistics, based on police data, showing the number of assaults has jumped 70 per cent since Labor came to power in late 1999, with the number of serious assaults growing at a vastly faster rate.

http://www.theage.com.au/national/brumby-finds-it-hard-to-be-humble-20100213-nyoc.html

It was classic Brumby: never admit defeat, never admit mistakes, everything is just fine, nothing to see here. And, by the way, have we told you lately how great our political strategies are?

Think about what Labor strategists were saying last night. They said initial internal polling was showing that, at the campaign's beginning, the government would suffer a swing of around 15 to 16 per cent in Altona, a seat with a margin of 20.3 per cent. If you halved a swing of that size - to make allowances for the fact that people often vote against governments in byelections - and applied it state-wide in November, Brumby will not realise his dream of being an elected premier.

But, seeing this rather alarming internal polling, did Labor think maybe it was time to address and acknowledge concerns? No, not really. The conclusion it seems to have reached is that the government's path is correct. The argument, instead, is that attacks on Ted Baillieu for his real estate company selling a school more than a decade ago were on the money. That they worked. And that's partly why the swing was ''only'' 12.3 per cent.

That kind of self-analysis is not going to get the Government very far this year.

http://www.theage.com.au/national/brumby-rail-promise-stalls-20100214-nzgk.html

PREMIER John Brumby's pledge to speed up government action to fix Melbourne's public transport system has been undercut by the revelation his election-year roll-out of new trains is falling further behind schedule.

Under the $38 billion transport plan Labor promised the first of 38 new trains would be operating by the end of last year. But it was sent back to the workshop within hours of being unveiled in the last week of December, where it remains.

On top of the delays in introducing the myki ticket system to trams and buses, the train delays are further embarrassment to Mr Brumby as he seeks to recover from the Altona rebuff before the November state election.

Mr Baillieu predicted the government would respond to the rebuff by spending millions more on taxpayer-funded advertising and "spin" in the lead-up to the state election.
